Mourners kicked out of Heaton Cemetery for 'lockdown boozing at the grave of a loved one'

A grieving group of mourners were kicked out of a Newcastle cemetery due to their rowdy behaviour.

As the group gathered at the grave of a loved one, booze flowed as they marked the anniversary of their death.

However, council staff were called as what should have been a sombre occasion escalated - with loud music blasted in Heaton Cemetery.

Newcastle City Council has now urged those paying respects to do so in a "decent, quiet and orderly manner".

The incident is understood to have occurred last month and was one of "several reports of inappropriate behaviour" at the Benton Road site.

Some locals told ChronicleLive that people had even turned up to the cemetery armed with sun-loungers, although the council was unable to confirm that.

However, a council spokesperson urged those visiting the cemetery during lockdown to be "respectful".

“We appreciate this is a difficult time for people and the coronavirus pandemic is affecting many aspects of life, including how we remember our loved ones," the spokesperson added.

“We would remind residents that while you are permitted to visit cemeteries, you are only allowed to attend with members of your own household and social-distancing guidelines must be adhered to at all times.

"Guests should conduct themselves in a decent, quiet and orderly manner throughout their visit.”
