Mourners held at gunpoint during wake as armed robbers steal cash and mobiles

Callous armed robbers stormed into a funeral home during a wake and demanded mourners hand over their cash and phones.

The shocking incident was caught on CCTV security cameras at an undertakers' chapel in Mexico City.

Mourners were paying their respects over coffee at the wake when two gunmen burst into the room.

They held up the wake at gunpoint, one standing guard at the entrance while the other walked around the room.

Nobody challenged the gunmen as everybody was told to give their money and mobile phones.

The video was later shared on social media by one of the victims who revealed what happened.

She said: "We were at the wake of one of my husband's relatives when two scumbags assaulted us and took our mobile phones.

"I ask you two things: one to help me to share this video and the other to ask people not to buy stolen phones as this helps them to keep stealing as for them it is a good business."

Police have launched an investigation into the robbery at the premises of Funerales Ermita, a firm of undertakers, in the crime-plagued Iztapalapa area.

Funeral staff told local media it was the first time they had suffered a robbery at a funeral, although not the first time armed robbers had attempted one.

Iztapalapa is the most heavily populated borough of Mexico City and has one of the city's highest crime and murder rates.

Police have not made any arrests so far.
