Mourners gather for touching balloon release in memory of Durham crash victims Shauna and Kelsey Marie Stokes

Family and friends of two "beautiful" young girls who died in a crash in County Durham gathered to mourn them with an emotional balloon release.

Shauna and Kelsey Marie Stokes tragically died following a collision between Horden and Blackhall Colliery on September 2.

Both girls aged three and 17, who have been described as "beautiful angels", passed away in hospital.

In an emotional tribute held on Saturday (September 5), traffic was held as a sea of pink and blue balloons were released into the air.

Mourners wiped away tears as they stood for a moment to remember the two girls before returning to the side of the road.

Moving tributes were left at the road, with photos of the girls left alongside emotional messages and tributes.

One message said the girls will "rest in heavenly peace" with notes being left alongside pink balloons, flowers and teddy bears.

Their families are being supported by specialist officers.

Police are still investigating the circumstances of the crash between a van and a blue Peugeot 206 which injured five others.

In a statement, a family member said: "Rip princesses loved and missed very much. Please can everyone continue praying for Megan, Cheyenne, Michelle and Kelly."

Sergeant Pete Tate, from Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit, said: "This is a tragic incident for all involved and we would like to offer our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of those who have lost their lives.

"We are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision and would like to speak to anyone who may have any information that could help our investigation.

"If you have dashcam footage of the vehicles prior to the collision and have not already spoken to us, then please get in touch with us.

"Likewise, if you saw the vehicles driving in the local area before the collision then please call us."

Anyone with any information is asked to call Durham Constabulary on 101, quoting incident number 207 of September 2.
