Mourne Mountain walker dies after taking ill near Slieve Moughanmore

A man has died after taking ill whilst out walking in the Mournes.

The walker became unwell close to the Windy Gap near Slieve Moughanmore on Saturday afternoon, October 17.

Mourne Mountain Rescue team were tasked to the scene to provide assistance before the NI Air Ambulance arrived.

In a statement on their Facebook page, Mourne Mountain Rescue confirmed the walker was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesperson said: "At 1357hrs the team received a call to assist a walker who had taken ill while walking close to the Windy Gap near Slieve Moughanmore. His walking companion and other walkers nearby provided initial assistance until the arrival of the NI Air Ambulance.

"Unfortunately, despite the efforts of all, he was pronounced deceased on scene. The team recovered the deceased by stretcher carry and vehicle transfer into the care of undertakers.

"Our thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends of the deceased."
