Jose Mourinho names Man Utd player who will "always be my boy"

Jose Mourinho has claimed that Scott McTominay has the potential to become a star and believes he could become a key player for Scotland in the future.

It was Mourinho who gave the 22-year-old his first taste of first-team football at Old Trafford after he came through the youth team at United, handing him his debut against Arsenal in 2017.

McTominay gradually became a more frequent starter under Mourinho, and his ex-manager believes he will go right to the very top of the game, especially now his old assistant from Chelsea , Steve Clarke, has been appointed Scotland manager.

When asked about McTominay's role for his national side, Mourinho said: “I think he’s more than ready.

“First of all, he feels his country deeply, I know that.

“And second you have an accumulation of experience during all these years.

“Assistant manager in top clubs, first-team manager in many others.

“Now the last couple of years in Scotland, I think this challenge comes in the right moment for him.

“And I just hope that my boy can help him because Scott McTominay will always be my boy.”

McTominay has won seven caps for his country, and will be hoping to add a few more to that tally when Scotland take on Cyprus and Belgium in their European Championship Qualifiers next month.

He appeared 22 times for United in total this season, scoring twice in the process which included a long-range strike against Wolves which won United's Goal of the Month award for April.

Mourinho, meanwhile, is still yet to return to management following his departure from United in December.

He has most recently been appearing as a pundit for BeIN Sports, but he has been linked with the vacant position at Juventus .

He said earlier this year that he "belongs at the top" and said at 55 years old he was too young to retire from club management, but it remains to be seen if any club decide to give the controversial coach another chance this summer.
