Mountjoy Prison inmates rushed to hospital after overdosing on illegal drug

Inmates at a Dublin prison had to be rushed to hospital after overdosing on alleged illegal drugs.

Six residents of Mountjoy Prison fell ill following the incident last week.

Two had to be taken to hospital for treatment while the other four were attended to by medical staff at the prison.

It is believed that the inmates took the drug "Spice" which is also known as "fake weed" or "synthetic marijuana".

Some of the ingredients used to make it are similar to marijuana but the effects are much different and often stronger.

A spokesman for the Irish Prison Services told Dublin Live: "The Prison Service can confirm that on the 14 December 2020, medical staff from Mountjoy Prison attended a number of prisoners who fell ill due to the alleged use of illicit substances.

"As a result, two prisoners required hospital treatment."
