ATLANTA–Jackson Wolf had a solid pitching performance and West Virginia’s bats came to life as the Mountaineers downed Georgia State 8-2 on Saturday afternoon in the Atlanta Challenge.
Wolf (1-0) tossed five innings. He surrendered one run on four hits while fanning four.
Darius Hill had two hits and scored two runs for WVU (1-1). Freshman Paul McIntosh and Tevin Tucker both drove in two runs.
The Mountaineers scored eight runs on seven hits. The Panthers (0-2) scored two runs on six hits.
Georgia State’s Jake Rogers suffered the loss. He pitched five innings, giving up four runs on just one hit. However, he issued five free passes that proved costly.
In the top of the first, a hit batsman and three walks helped give WVU a 2-0 lead. Tyler Doanes scored on McIntosh’s walk. Then Tristen Hudson’s sacrifice fly plated Hill.
Brandon Bell drilled a 2-1 pitch over the left field fence to cut the Panthers’ deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth.
The Mountaineers tacked on four runs in the top of the sixth. With bases loaded, McIntosh scored on a wild pitch. Then Tucker’s first collegiate hit, a single up the middle, knocked in two more runs. Brandon White doubled home Tucker to make it a 6-1 lead.
WVU added two runs in the ninth. Doanes scored on McIntosh’s groundout and Hill scored on Ivan Gonzalez’s sacrifice fly to center field.
Georgia State added one run in the ninth.
The Mountaineers will take on Georgia Tech at 6 p.m. (ET) in the final game of the Atlanta Challenge.
