Mountain West faces SEC for TV ratings
ESPN announced a slew of television announcements for the upcoming college football season and that included the Mountain West title game. The conference championship will air on ESPN and kick at 4 p.m. ET on Dec. 7.
The late afternoon kick on the East Coast is a good idea to avoid potential really cold night and some nasty weather.
While being on ESPN is a good thing as is the afternoon but the ratings for this game may not be exceptional since the SEC title game kicks at the exact same time on CBS.
The only other game to kick in that similar timeslot is potential a very important game for the New Year’s Six bowl spot as the AAC kicks off at 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC. So, there will be a lot of back and forth if that Group of Five bid is on the line and that can make for an exciting afternoon.
None of the other conferences will overlap with the Mountain West title game so if there are any blowouts people flock to, hopefully, a top 25 matchup.
This is actually better than the past few years where this game kicked a bit later in the day and there was an overlap on the front end of the SEC title game and then the backend of the game had competition from the Big 12 and Big Ten title games.
