Mountain rescue heroes battle blizzards to save stranded drivers across Scotland

Mountain rescuers ferried a dozen motorists to safety after they were stranded in vehicles by heavy snow as Scotland’s weather misery continued.

Members of the Moffat Mountain Rescue Team battled the elements to come to the aid of drivers on the A702 Dalveen Pass, north of Durisdeer village, Dumfriesshire, on Tuesday evening.

A total of 12 people were extracted from cars and ferried out in the team’s Land Rover.

Severe weather brought further disruption yesterday, with traffic at a standstill on some roads and several schools shut.

And Scotland is set to be battered by 70mph gales and torrential rain at the weekend as Storm Dennis arrives.

In another life-saving operation, the Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue Team was called out in the Borders on Tuesday to help occupants of a vehicle which had slipped off the road in a “remote location”.

The search lasted four hours in which team members described as “some of the harshest” they’d ever worked in.

Meanwhile, car crashes caused big delays on the A77 and the M77 yesterday. It’s thought four cars were involved in smashes close to junction eight southbound.

Police also reported a number of crashes in Dumfries and Galloway.

Deep snow drifts had to be cleared from the West Highland Line at Corrour yesterday morning.

The weather also forced a number of schools to close in Dumfries and Galloway and the Highlands.

A Met Office yellow warning for snow remained in place for southern Scotland up to 11am today.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for rain tomorrow for central and southern parts of the country. A yellow warning for rain and wind was announced for central and southern Scotland from 9am to 6pm on Saturday.

And a further wind warning was issued for the whole of Scotland from 12pm on Sunday to 12pm on Monday.
