Mount Isa Santa has been the man in red for 20 years

It is a show of Christmas cheer quite unlike any other.

Mount Isa local Graham Brennan has been volunteering at the Mount Isa hospital every Christmas Day for a decade — donning a Santa suit and bringing joy to sick children and their families.

It's a day best spent at home, with a Christmas tree, plenty of food, and presents — but for those with no other choice but to celebrate in hospital, Mr Brennan said his small sacrifice was more than worth the big reward.

"Santa has been a joy of my life really," Mr Brennan said.

"I enjoy getting into the whole regalia.

"Some of them (children) take to it, and some of them though a little bit undecided, but still most of the time it's a good smile."

At 85 years of age, Mr Brennan said he has always loved Christmas, ever since he was a young boy growing up as the youngest of four children.

"I look forward to that special time at Christmas time when you can bring so much joy and happiness to the folks in hospital," he said.

"Let's hope it all goes well in the next few years and I'm still around to do it.

"A lot of time growing up Santa has been a true friend, a good friend to me, and the fact that I'm still in good health and still able to do it year after year. I'm very happy."

With his own goal to live to be 100 years old, Mr Brennan said he has no plans to stop his annual visit as Santa to the hospital.
