Fleurieu Peninsula fire blocking Victor Harbor Road

A farmer drives along a smoky road near the Mount Compass fire.

An out-of-control grassfire is burning just south of Mount Compass on South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsula.

Water bombers have been deployed to the area near Victor Harbor Road to help battle the blaze, which has burned through 97 hectares of grassland and destroyed a hay shed.

Victor Harbor Road is closed to southbound traffic.

The fire is burning in a south-easterly direction towards Goolwa Road but the Country Fire Service (CFS) says a change may push the fire towards Through Road and Nangkita Road.

The CFS issued a bushfire watch and act message for the area, warning people to leave if they were not prepared.

Forty-six crews and eight aircraft are attending.

A severe fire danger warning is in place for parts of South Australia today, including the Mount Lofty Ranges, the Murraylands, and the upper and lower South-East.

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting very hot and dry north to north-westerly winds in the late morning ahead of gusty south-westerly winds, reaching a top of 45 kilometres per hour during the afternoon.

The CFS is advising people within the danger areas to action their bushfire survival plans.
