One of the stars of Moulin Rouge! The Musical has described the “pure adrenaline and pure joy” of finally being on stage.

A week of shows were cancelled in December because of Covid infections and last night’s performance in front of the critics was the third attempt after two previous press nights were postponed.

Liisi LaFontaine who plays Satine, the part portrayed by Nicole Kidman in the film, said it had been “a long time coming”.

“It definitely feels like this is a moment we’ve waited for and we were all very nervous and excited,” she said.

“Everyone just appreciates being on stage even more after all these months of not being able to do anything. We can feel the excitement from the audience and hopefully they can feel it as well.”

The American actress said she had not been able to go home to Los Angeles for months due to the pandemic but London had become “like a second home”. She said all the problems faced by the show made it feel even more important that it has finally got under way properly.

She added: “Life feels very fleeting these days so when I’m there and I hear the crowd screaming it’s just pure adrenaline and pure joy. We know the show is so special and definitely very needed right now. It could be the last time any night and I think that’s what makes it so exciting and so fulfilling.”
