'Mouldy food' found as Mansfield kebab house is given one-star hygiene rating

A Nottinghamshire kebab house has been hit with a one-star food hygiene rating.

Bridge Pizza and Kebab House, in Bridge Street, Mansfield, received the rating after an inspection in December 2020.

Managers were given 14 points to action and handed a one-star rating by Mansfield District Council, meaning 'major improvement is necessary'.

Mouldy salami was found by inspectors who threw it away during the visit. Inspectors told the manager that mouldy food "must not be stored with food ready for human consumption".

Inspectors also found that there was no disinfectant on site, which is "not acceptable for a business that deal with raw meat and ready to eat foods".

The eatery, which serves kebabs and pizza as well as burgers, has been told that improvement is necessary in all three areas inspected.

The report added that a person on-site preparing food had a "significant" lack of food safety knowledge and "no explanation of how to tell if food was cooked". They were told to attend a course to improve understanding of food safety.

The premises had gaps in the roof and the rear door was left open, leaving "an open invitation to pests".

Officers told bosses they must clean various areas including the fridge, microwave, utensils and the freezer.

A spokesperson for the takeaway said they declined to consent to a story going ahead but put the issues with food hygiene down to financial difficulties caused by the pandemic.
