Motsi Mabuse sparks fears she'll miss Strictly again amid new Covid travel rules

Strictly Come Dancing judge Motsi Mabuse could be forced to miss a second week of the show following England's updated travel rules.

Last week, the professional dancer was replaced on the panel by Cynthia Erivo due to having to pull out after coming into close contact with someone with Covid.

And Motsi has sparked fears that she will once again not return to dish out scores, over the weekend, after posting a video from a Berlin hotel room following an isolation period on Tuesday.

This means that the judge could be racing against the clock to take part in the series on Saturday amid the new travel rules that Prime Minister Boris Johnson introduced this week, following the discovery of the Omicron coronavirus variant in South Africa.

From yesterday morning anyone flying into the UK needs to take a PCR test within two days of arrival and must isolate until they receive a negative result.

Therefore Motsi needs to touchdown in the UK sooner rather than later in order to factor in time to take the test and receive the results before her set call time.

The Mirror has contacted the BBC for comment on whether Motsi will be back on TV screens this weekend.

Last Friday, Motsi announced that she was forced to skip Strictly over the weekend.

The 40-year-old, who joined the popular BBC competition series in 2019, revealed the news on social media earlier after being contacted by NHS Test and Trace.

She was replaced by award-winning actor and singer Cynthia Erivo, who impressed viewers during her stint as a guest judge on the show after stepping in after Craig Revel Horwood, who had previously tested positive for Covid, was absent.

In a statement, posted on social media, Motsi said that she was "gutted" to miss Strictly.

She wrote: "I am gutted to say I will have to miss this weekend on Strictly. Yesterday, I was contacted by NHS Test and Trace as being in close contact with someone on Sunday 21st Nov who has since tested positive."

The dancer said that the fact she is double vaccinated and has had a booster would "normally mean exemption from isolation under the 'close contact' rules."

She however added: "But unfortunately German EU vaccines are not recognised and neither is my booster in this instance. So I must follow UK Government guidance and can only return after 30 November to the UK."

"Our health is the most important thing and luckily I've been tested multiple times this week and I'm negative. I'm healthy. I'm with my family - that's what matters," she said.

She concluded: "I wish everyone good luck. Sending my love. Keep dancing. Until then, lots of love and stay safe."

Addressing the news, a spokesperson for the BBC series has said: "We can confirm Motsi Mabuse will not be taking part in Strictly Come Dancing this weekend.

"We are delighted that Cynthia Erivo will be joining us as a guest judge again, joining Craig Revel Horwood, Anton Du Beke and Head Judge, Shirley Ballas on the judging panel."

The spokesperson further commented: "We look forward to having Motsi back with us next weekend."

*Strictly will return on Saturday night from 6.55 pm on BBC One. You can catch up through the BBC iPlayer.
