The M4 has been closed in both directions near Bath due to a major traffic incident, Wiltshire Police have said.
Police said the motorway had been closed in the early hours of Thursday between junctions 17 and 18 following the “serious road traffic collision” and was expected to be closed “for several hours”.
“Drivers should avoid using this stretch of the road until told otherwise. Follow @HighwaysSWEST for the latest info on diversions,” Wiltshire Police tweeted.
Diversions were put in place and motorists were advised to use alternative routes.
A spokesperson for Highways England said traffic is building at either end of the M4 closure.
“There is approximately 3.5 miles of slow moving traffic on approach to the M4 eastbound closure and 2.5 miles westbound,” said a spokesperson.
“Please plan ahead of your journey today,” she added.
We have asked South Western Ambulance Service for information about the extent of the casualties of the two crashes, and are waiting for a response.
