Motorway lane closed as emergency responders search for man in Severn Estuary

Emergency crews have descended on the M48 after reports a man was seen in the Severn Estuary.

A lane on the motorway was closed for almost an hour while Avon and Somerset Police officers investigated.

Now a police helicopter and the coastguards are searching the area.

A force spokesperson said: “At 1.47pm today (22 July) we received a report a man had entered the Severn Estuary.

“HM Coastguard and the police helicopter are currently carrying out a search of the area.”

Traffic has returned to normal on the M48 and all lanes have reopened.
