Motorway closed after van bursts into flames

A motorway was closed after a van burst into flames.

Firefighters were called to the M61 at Bolton at about 3.30am on Friday.

Pictures from the scene show the van engulfed in flames on the hard shoulder.

The M61 southbound between junction six Bolton North and junction eight Chorley was closed for more than two hours to allow the carriageway to be resurfaced.

It fully reopened at about 6am, Highways England said.

Highways England North West tweeted: "The #M61 southbound J8 (#Chorley #A674 #A6) to #J6 (#BoltonNorth #Horwich #A6207) 2 lanes have been closed due to a van fire.

"The fire service are on the scene and recovery has been requested for the vehicle."
