Motorway chaos in Merseyside after serious crashes on M6 and M58

There was chaos on the roads today, as serious crashes hit the region's motorways.

There were serious crashes on the M6 and M58 - with a police incident on the M6 also causing tailbacks.

Drivers reported being stuck in their cars for four hours, as a crash between J24 and J25 on the M6 closed the motorway.

According to travel website INRIX, pot hole repair work was being carried out earlier between the junctions, and the accident took place in the queues.

Emergency services blocked the road, while paramedics assessed the occupants.

A diversion was set up and motorists were advised to avoid the area if at all possible.

At time of writing, the state of the drivers and passengers involved in the incidents was unknown.

The vehicles involved in the crash were moved to the hard shoulder, while crews dealt with an oil spillage.

There were four miles of tailbacks following the crash, with people on social media saying they had been in the queues for hours.

Sand was put down to help mop up the oil spillage and the carriageway eventually re-opened around 3:20pm - but the tailbacks took longer to clear.

On the M6 Northbound four bikers were stabbed at Knutsford services, shutting the road between J18-20 at around 3:30pm, as police dealt with the incident on the J19 slip road.

All four men were taken to hospital by ambulance and air ambulance and their injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

The closure led to traffic queues of over an hour.

And the M58 was closed from J1 and J3 due to a serious road traffic collision, that also happened around 3:30pm.

The road was expected to stay closed for several hours for several hours for North West Motorway Police Group investigation work.
