Motorola Razr flip-phone could return this year - with an eye-watering price tag

It was one of the must-have phones of the early 2000s, and now almost 15 years after it was first released, the Motorola Razr could be back.

The retro phone was known for its flip-out screen, and was even featured in several TV programmes and films, including Lost, Entourage and The Devil Wears Prada.

Now, a report by LetsGoDigital indicates that the Motorola Razr could be re-released by the end of 2019.

The original version of the phone featured a hinge connecting the keypad and screen, but the report indicates that the 2019 version will have a foldable screen.

The original Razr (Motorola)

This could put the Motorola Razr in direct competition with the Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X, which were also announced this year.

While the phone cost just under £500 back in 2004, the report indicates that the new version could be a lot more expensive.

LetsGoDigital explained: “The smartphone will be launched in America within a few months. A price of $1500 USD has been discussed for a long time.

“According to our source, the Motorola RAZR folding smartphone will also be released in Europe shortly after the launch in America, here the device will get a suggested retail price of €1500.”

This converts to around £1,375 in the UK, suggesting the Razr could be almost three times more expensive than the original version.

While this is undeniably a huge amount of money to spend on a phone, it’s still cheaper than both the Galaxy Fold (£1,800) and the Huawei Mate X (£2,000).

As always, it’s worth keeping in mind that these are still rumours, and Motorola is yet to confirm a release date for the new device.
