Motorists who run out of fuel while driving could face hefty fine

Motorists who run out of fuel while driving could be slapped with a hefty fine. This is because causing an obstruction with a vehicle is an offence under the careless and inconsiderate driving penalty.

If the driver is forced to stop the vehicle in the road, they may face a fine of up to £100 and three points on their licence. But if the incident goes on to cause an accident or another serious incident, the punishment could be much harsher.

They could be hit with an unlimited fine, be charged with careless driving and face nine penalty points. The motorist won't face a fine, however, if they manage to pull over, park up and get out of the way of other vehicles.

Neil Greig, IAM RoadSmart Director of Policy and Research, told the Express : "We have very little sympathy for drivers who run out of fuel on the motorway. There is no excuse for entering a motorway with low fuel or if you know something is wrong with your car.”

England is not the only place where it’s illegal to run out of fuel. Drivers using Germany’s famous Autobahn motorway system drivers could face punishment too, the Mirror reports.

Drivers who do accidentally run out of petrol or diesel when out driving also risk damaging their car, as the fuel pump could suck dirt up from the bottom of the tank and clog it up, meaning it would need to be replaced.
