Motorists warned of lane closure as work begins on busy Hamilton street

Work is set to get underway on resurfacing the pavements on a section of Hamilton’s Almada Street.

The work will require a diversion for pedestrians and the closure of one traffic lane, but access to local businesses and properties will be maintained throughout.

South Lanarkshire Council will start the work to resurface the south footway between Union Street and Montrose Crescent on Monday, July 13, and it is expected to continue for up to 11 days and be completed by Friday, July  24.

A pedestrian diversion utilising existing controlled crossings will be put in place for the safety of foot traffic.

The work will require the closure of one westbound lane of Almada Street adjacent to the pavement and as a result there are likely to be delays to traffic both through the area of the works and approaching the area.

South Lanarkshire Council’s head of roads and transportation services Gordon Mackay said: “While traffic levels are normally lower during the summer holiday period and have been lighter due to the pandemic response we are expecting there to be some unavoidable disruption due to these essential works.

“I would encourage road users to take alternative routes during these works if that is possible, some disruption will be unavoidable but we will do all we can to keep it to a minimum.”
