Motorists warned not to leave cars overnight in car parks after spate of catalytic converter thefts

Drivers are being warned to think again about where they park their cars at night after an increase in thefts of catalytic converters from underneath vehicles.

Avon and Somerset police issued a fresh set of guidelines for drivers in South Gloucestershire, warning them to be mindful of their vehicle's security, particularly at night.

The number of instances of thieves taking the converters from cars has mushroomed in the past - it was a crime of the noughties, but is making - particularly on the South Gloucestershire side of Bristol.

In 2018 there were no reported thefts of catalytic converters from cars, but in 2019 there were suddenly 14 reports - and that trend has continued into 2020.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset police warned drivers to be mindful of their vehicle's security - and where they park it overnight.

"We have received several reports in recent weeks of the items being stolen from cars in South Gloucestershire," he said.

"We would ask all drivers to take precautions to minimise the risk of their vehicle being targeted," he added.

They came up with a four-point plan to try to ensure your vehicle is safer.

  • Park your vehicle in a locked garage overnight, if possible

  • If you need to park overnight on the road, choose a well-lit area

  • Ensure your car is locked and alarmed when not in use

And police also said number plate theft is being linked to this new crimewave.

"Several vehicles believed to be involved in the theft of catalytic converters have used false number plates, to try to avoid detection," said the police spokesperson.

"Therefore we urge any drivers who notice their number plate has been stolen to contact the police, on 101 or by using our online form, to help us with our enquiries," he added.
