Motorists trying to beat the heat by driving in flip flops could face £5,000 fine

It's scorching outside and many of us are doing all we can to try and stay cool as the mercury rises.

But motorists should take care - getting behind the wheel while wearing flip flops could carry serious consequences.

While driving in flip flops isn't illegal in itself, motorists must ensure they are not at risk of a 'driving carelessly' charge.

Under Rule 97 of the Highway Code, motorists must wear "footwear and clothing which does not prevent you using the controls in the correct manner".

If you are in an accident and police spot you're wearing flip flops, you could be charged with driving without due care and attention - also known as careless driving.

This carries a £100 on-the-spot fine and three penalty points on your licence.

But in more serious cases, or if this is contested, drivers in court face a maximum penalty of £5,000, nine penalty points and potentially a driving ban.

Selim Cavanagh, from insurance firm ingenie, previously warned Mirror readers of the risk.

“They slip off, slide under the pedals, get caught between your feet and the pedals and if your feet are wet, they’ll affect your ability to brake if you need to," he said.

"Driving in flip flops can create a dangerous driving environment, and put you, your passengers, and other road users at risk."

The RAC has some important guidelines to consider when choosing footwear, as your shoes should

  • Have a sole no thicker than 10mm…
  • … but the sole should not be too thin or soft.
  • Provide enough grip to stop your foot from slipping off the pedals.
  • Not be too heavy.
  • Not limit ankle movement.
  • Be narrow enough to avoid accidentally depressing two pedals at once.
