Motorists told to expect delays ahead of more M74 road closures

Motorists are being warned of a series of road closures on the M74 across Lanarkshire from today (Wednesday) until the end of next month.

Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland, will undertake essential maintenance at a number of locations until Saturday, May 29.

Phase One will take place on the M74 southbound between Junctions 6 and 7 from 8pm tonight until 6am each day until Saturday, April 24.

Traffic will be diverted via the Junction 6 off-slip road onto the A72, Carlisle Road/Lanark Road. From here, traffic will join the A71, Ayr Road where it will be able to re-join the M74 southbound via the Junction 8 on-slip road.

Phase Two will take place on the M74 northbound carriageway at Junction 9 Kirkmuirhill from 8pm on Friday, April 23, to 6am the following morning.

Traffic will be diverted via Junction 10 onto the B7078, Carlisle Road and will be able to re-join the M74 northbound via the Junction 8 on-slip road.

Phase Three will then take place on the M74 northbound carriageway between the Railway Bridge and Junction 6 from 8pm Thursday, April 29 until 6am on Sunday, May 2, again during the hours of 8pm and 6am, each night.

Traffic will be diverted via the Junction 8 off-slip road onto the A71, Ayr Road and then joining the A72 Lanark Road/Carlisle Road. From here, traffic will be able to re-join the M74 northbound via the Junction 6 on-slip road.

Finally, Phase Four will take place on the M74 southbound carriageway between Junctions 8 and 9 from 8pm Friday, May 28 to 6am on Saturday, May 29.

Traffic will be diverted via Junction 8 onto the B7078, Carlisle Road and will be able to re-join the M74 southbound via the Junction 10 on-slip road.

A spokesman for Amey said: "All our operatives will follow strict physical distancing and hygiene protocols throughout the programme, in line with the Scottish Government’s COVID-19 guidance.

"Please note, all schemes are weather dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled if weather conditions are not favourable. "
