Motorists in County Durham left stranded in snow after ignoring storm Artwen 'road closed' signs

Durham Police have warned motorists to not 'venture off' main roads after a number of cars became stuck in the snow.

This weekend, the region has seen travel disruptions as the Met Office issued a rare red weather warning for wind on Friday.

Storm Arwen left a trail of destruction which saw gusts reach up to nearly 100mph in Northumberland on Friday.

The destruction, caused by gales, led to travel chaos on Friday and Saturday, with trains cancelled, roads blocked and cars damaged by fallen trees and debris.

Emergency services have been supporting authorities in the clean up operation throughout Saturday and Sunday while another alert for more snow and ice has been issued.

On Sunday morning, Durham Police took to Twitter to urge motorists to not venture off the main roads unnecessarily.

A number of cars have become stuck in the snow in some of Teesdale's minor roads after drivers ignored road closures.

The post said: "Our car can get to most places, & we'll go wherever we can to help!

"Some of the minor roads remain poor in Teesdale along with cables and trees down, yet some motorists are ignoring the road closures."

Throughout Sunday, snow has continued to fall for some parts of the region with police urging motorists to watch out for road signs while driving.

The spokesperson added: "Please don't venture off the main roads unnecessarily & watch out for signs!"

A yellow weather warning for ice is in place for the whole of the North East with authorities warning the public to only travel if necessary.
