Motorists have lucky escape as campervan overturns on M4 and M5 junction

The occupants of a camper van had a lucky escape when their vehicle crashed and slid onto its side on a usually busy motorway junction near Bristol.

The crash happened on the Almondsbury interchange and involved another vehicle at the point where the two slip roads from both the eastbound and westbound M4 merge to go onto the northbound M5.

The crash happened before 7am on Sunday morning - at a time when the motorway was quiet, and all three emergency services rushed to the scene.

Paramedics treated those in the campervan for minor injuries, while fire crews from Patchway Fire Station hosed down the scene, righted the campervan, moved it to the hard shoulder and helped Highways England staff clear debris.

Police closed both slip roads from the M4, causing tailbacks and congestion for almost two hours as drivers had to wait to get onto the M5 heading north.
