Motorists have been repeatedly ignoring a set of temporary traffic lights in Leith

Drivers are being warned to stop ignoring a set of temporary traffic lights on Leith's Baltic Street.

Roads police in Edinburgh say they have had numerous reports of motorists running red lights in the area in recent weeks. Measures are in place with significant works currently ongoing at the nearby Constitution Street as part of the project to extend the tram network to Newhaven.

Traffic on the road has been much busier as a result, with additional queues reported, however officers say not all of those using the route have been complying with the law – warning anyone caught running a red light will be fined and hit with penalty points.

Road Policing Scotland posted on social media: "There have been numerous reports of vehicles ignoring the temporary traffic lights on Baltic Street in Edinburgh.

"These lights are enforced by police in exactly the same way as the permanent ones. Fail to comply and you risk 3 points on license and a £100 fine."

Road policing teams have been busy in Leith in recent days.

Edinburgh Live reported on Friday how officers, joined by council teams, had stopped and inspected more than 50 taxis and private hire cabs during a "multi-agency road check" on Commercial Street.
