Motorists fined by police after huge car meet at Cheddar Gorge

Police have fined several people following a huge car meet at Cheddar Gorge over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The gathering, which took place on Sunday afternoon (May 24), reportedly featured between 200 and 300 vehicles including sports cars and supercars.

According to Somerset Live, an eyewitness slammed the group, describing their actions as "selfish" and claiming they were not adhering to social distancing guidelines.

Police are continuing to investigate the unauthorised event and have said they have already fined seven people.

Sergeant Joe Piscina of Avon and Somerset Police said: “I would like to reassure the public who took the time to report the issues over the weekend that we will be looking back at the recorded video from Sunday's car meet to identify those involved and will take retrospective action against anyone who breached regulations or committed offences.

"Due to the large volume of traffic in the area, our priority was to keep the public safe and encourage those drivers to move on.

"The vehicles involved though were filmed to allow us to review the footage subsequently and take action where necessary. Seven penalty notices were issued for driving offences at the scene.

"We've been clear both in the run-up to this bank holiday and previously that we will not tolerate antisocial driving, especially in Cheddar Gorge."

Police carried out a number of other patrols at Cheddar over the Bank Holiday weekend and issued 15 warnings related to breaches of lockdown.

Sergeant Piscina added: "This weekend saw a large number of people travelling to Cheddar Gorge to exercise meaning the area was particularly busy.

"Officers were on patrol throughout the weekend engaging with the public and explaining the need to adhere to current guidelines around social distancing.

"The overwhelming majority of people were receptive to what they were told. However, 15 warnings were issued to people contravening the requirements.

"There were also occasions when drivers arrived at the gorge not for exercising and they were spoken to and many agreed to move on."
