'Motorists being ripped off' with petrol as high as 208p a litre

Some petrol stations have reportedly cashed in on the ongoing fuel supply situation by inflating pump prices, amid the high demand for fuel.

A report by the Daily Express implied that outrage has swept the nation, with petrol bosses branded an "absolute disgrace", "greedy" and that they have "ripped off desperate drivers".

Former roads minister Sir Mike Penning and Tory MP was quoted as saying "motorists are being ripped off" and that "some firms are cashing in on a crisis".

The RAC stated that the rises are a "bleak picture for drivers".

The paper stated that one site reportedly charged 208.5p a litre for petrol - above the 136.59p unleaded average.

Petrol rose to more than 150p a litre - while one site charged 208.5p, but still ran dry.

It comes as Army tanker drivers have been put on standby in preparation to deliver fuel in order to ease the chaos at petrol stations, the Government has announced in the face of mounting pressure.

The Army tanker drivers will deliver fuel to where it is needed most, and and provide, and provide reassurance that supplies remain strong, the Government said

However, Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng, who issued the Military Aid to the Civil Authorities request, added: “While the fuel industry expects demand will return to its normal levels in the coming days, it’s right that we take this sensible, precautionary step.

“The UK continues to have strong supplies of fuel, however we are aware of supply chain issues at fuel station forecourts and are taking steps to ease these as a matter of priority.

“If required, the deployment of military personnel will provide the supply chain with additional capacity as a temporary measure to help ease pressures caused by spikes in localised demand for fuel.”
