Motorists and bus users face long delays on busy diversions set up after Cumberland Road closure

Motorists and bus users are facing long delays on their rush hour commutes due to the ongoing closure of Cumberland Road.

Diversions are in place as a result of the shutting of the road, due to the collapse of the embankment wall on the northern side of the River Avon last Friday.

The collapse took with it the Chocolate Path and some of the Harbour Railway, leading to fears for the safety of Cumberland Road itself.

The diversion route for cars, vans and buses is along Coronation Road, on the other side of the River Avon.

But the diversion led to heavier traffic on both Coronation Road as well as Hotwell Road this morning as drivers attempted to find another route.

Five stops on the Ashton Metrobus section and on Cumberland Road are also closed with temporary stops introduced along Coronation Road.

The closed stops used by the Metrobus service M2 and the Bristol Flyer service A1 are Aston Vale, Ashton Gate, Cumberland Basin, SS Great Britain and Wapping Wharf.

As for when the road will reopen and traffic returns to normal, as of early afternoon today (January 27) it was still unclear as surveying work to assess the extent of needed repairs was still be completed.

A notice for the temporary road closure is for until February 13, but this could be extended.

Meanwhile, pedestrians can continue to use the route, taking the footpath on the other side of Cumberland Road, along with cyclists who are asked to dismount through the works.

Bristol Live understands the initial assessment at the scene indicates the major collapse was probably the result of the wet weather, saturated ground and the general condition of the river wall and embankment, which suffered a landslip deep down back in 2017.
