Motorist with provisional licence halted in operation to tackle uninsured drivers

Police have hailed an operation to tackle uninsured drivers "again proving useful" after motorist with a provisional licence was stopped.

Northumbria Police Road Safety tweeted at 11.33pm last night (Tuesday) that the driver had been halted in Wallsend, between Necastle upon Tyne and South Shields in North East England.

It said: "#opdriveinsured tasking again proving fruitful, driver a provisional licence holder with no insurance. #Wallsend."

It is illegal to drive on Britain's roads with a provisional licence without a qualified driver sitting beside the provisional licence holder. If caught, offenders face a fine and penalty points on their licence.
