Motorist swerves to avoid drink-driver, 75, going wrong way down motorway

This is the terrifying moment a motorist was forced to swerve to avoid a pensioner driving the wrong way down one of Britain's busiest motorways while more than twice the alcohol limit.

Bolton OAP David Haughton got behind the wheel of his Volvo and headed along the M6 near Lancaster, Lancs, during rush hour on St George's Day this year.

Police say the 75-year-old was initially going in the right direction before turning around and driving towards oncoming traffic between junctions 33 and 32 just before 4pm.

The incident prompted dozens of frantic 999 calls.

A clip captured by another road user shows them having to swerve at the last second in order to avoid a horrifying collision.

Lancashire Police were called and officers found Haughton parked next to the central reservation.

The pensioner was breath tested and found to be over twice the drink driving limit.

He is currently serving an eight month jail sentence and a two year driving ban.

A police spokesman said: "The potential consequences of his actions could have easily been fatal."
