Motorist shamed by council photo after workers forced to tarmac around parked car

A motorist whose car blocked resurfacing work taking place has been shamed by the council with a photo posted online of the vehicle and the new tarmac around it.

Walsall Council’s actions appear to have been firmly backed by members of the public who have slammed the selfish behaviour of the car owner, reported Birmingham Live.

Residents were given plenty of notice about the repairs to Lysways Street said the council, but the driver of the black Chrysler ignored letters and signs to avoid the area.

Workers are also believed to have knocked on door but were unable to locate the driver - forcing them to leave the job unfinished.

Now the photo of the car blocking the road has been shared by the council and a spokesman for the council said that the job will now cost more money.

"Our highways maintenance team and contractor had a frustrating day yesterday when trying to do a good quality resurfacing job for the residents of Lysways Street in Walsall," he said.

"Despite putting letters through doors well in advance advising residents of exactly when the road needed to be clear of vehicles, as well as large signs on lighting columns and other advance signage one driver decided to ignore all the signage and park up.

"The car wasn’t there the day before. We tried door-knocking but to no avail and had to carry on with the job as best we could by working around the parked car.

"It’s a less than perfect job, which is disappointing, but it also adds cost to the job; money we could have used on highway repairs in other roads.

"We would like to thank the residents of Lysways Street who did understand the need to temporarily park elsewhere for their cooperation."

Many people have reacted angrily and feel that the council should have taken action against the owner of the car.

Richard Salt said: "Should have towed it off and made them pay the impound fee. It's parked half on the path as well."

Kimmy Bee added: "Should have towed the car away, fined the owner and the people he visited and put on extra costs for time-wasting and resources."
