A police spokeswoman confirmed the Lamborghini collided with a van, leaving the van driver with head injuries.

The injuries are not believed to be serious.

PC Richard Whiteley of West Yorkshire Police tweeted a picture of the damage to the sports car.

PC Whiteley said: "It’s only a car! But on this occasion a 20-minute-old brand new Lamborghini that stopped due mechanical failure in lane three, then hit from behind [by a vehicle] #couldhavecried"

The crash caused large delays on the southbound carriageway, which was closed while the vehicles were recovered.

All lanes were reopened by 2.50pm.
