Motorist remains in coma after suffering life-changing injuries in serious crash

A Tenby doorman will wake up from a coma with life-changing injuries after a horrific crash on the A40 in Carmarthenshire

Richard Jones, 30, has been in a medically-induced coma since arriving at Morriston Hospital in Swansea.

Mr Jones has been described by friends as "a man of many words" and are willing the "cheeky guy" to keep fighting. His family, including father Joey and sister Emma Louise, are rallying around the popular lad from Tenby and preparing to break the news that he will need a prosthetic leg once he has recovered.

His good friend and colleague, Nathan Palmer, has set up a fundraising page for Mr Jones and his family which has already raised more that £11,000 in just two days.

Mr Palmer said: "The accident has left Richard in a critical condition in hospital but he is fighting through like the champ he is. The injuries have been life changing, but he’ll come back stronger than ever and we’ll all be here to support him every step of the way.

"Any donations would be tremendously helpful towards the costs of treatment, care and a prosthetic leg which we all know that he will need in the months to come."

Mr Jones is a familiar face in Tenby where he works as a doorman. Mr Palmer said: "Richard is a man of many words that leaves me speechless. He is a hard-working lad on the door and is always there to reassure the safety of others when working on the door.

"He is a great leader and is pleasant towards the public and will always help out."

Mr Palmer also added on behalf of the family: "We all know Richard would be so touched and thankful for the love and support received for the past few days and the future to come.

"Richard's family are so overwhelmed by the love and support received and want to say a massive thank you in advance."

The Pembrokeshire man, who plays rugby for Tenby, was travelling in his Toyota Hilux pick-up at lunchtime on Friday, February 7 when he was involved in the crash. The incident, at the junction with the B4312 Travellers Rest, closed the road for several hours.

Dyfed-Powys Police are calling for motorists who saw the crash, or have dashcam footage of the vehicle travelling down the A40 towards Carmarthen from St Clears, to get in touch.

A spokesman said: "If you can help us, please get in touch with the Serious Collision Investigation Unit online at  http://bit.ly/DPPReportOnline, via email at contactcentre@dyfed-powys.pnn.police.uk or by phoning 101.

"It's important you quote reference DP-20200207-161 so our busy call handlers can marry your information to the correct incident as quickly as possible."
