Motorist has miracle escape in Storm Bella as Gardai send weather warning

A motorist had a lucky escape in Limerick on Sunday when Storm Bella sent a tree flying onto the road.

The tree was blown down near Castleconnell and came within inches of smashing through a car heading along the road.

Limerick Fire and Rescue arrived at the scene and luckily reported no injuries despite the close call.

A spokesperson said: "A lucky escape for this motorist as our City crews assisted Gardai with this incident near Castleconnell overnight. Thankfully no injuries were reported."

Gardai have been warning motorists to be careful on the roads due to the presence of Storm Bella.

They tweeted on Saturday: "Met Éireann has issued Status Yellow wind & rain warnings as Storm Bella is expected to sweep across the country later today. Please take extra care on our roads & always be aware of vulnerable road users."

And officers are also asking people to slow down in counties where snow is being reported in the past day.

They added: "Wintry road conditions reported in many counties, please reduce speed and drive to the conditions. Snowing in Cavan. Reduce speed and allow extra braking distance."
