Police identify body of boy found dead near Wagga Wagga

NSW Police established a crime scene at the spot where the body was found.

Police have identified the body of a 15-year-old boy who was found dead on a road in south-west New South Wales by a passing driver early this morning.

Police said a motorist noticed the body on the River Road at Wantabadgery, about 40 kilometres east of Wagga Wagga, about 1:30am and had pulled over to help.

They say he had been there for some time.

A crime scene was established after the body was found.

Detective Chief Inspector Andrew Spliet said the boy was from Wantabadgery.

"This is a small tightknit community, this is a road that's probably frequently used by members of this community," he said.

"We've spoken to members of the family in relation to the matter, they're obviously very distressed.

"We believe there is a person or persons who know what happened to this young man. This time of year it's a tragic set of circumstances and we'd be calling on anyone with information in relation to the matter to contact Crime Stoppers or local police."

Officers from the Crash Investigation Unit said they would look into the circumstances of the boy's death.
