Motorist drove at street fight in Hucknall Market - and injured an innocent pedestrian

A motorist was jailed for driving at a group fighting in the street - and hitting a girl using a zebra crossing.

She blacked out after her head hit the ground as a security man snatched the car keys, a court heard.

It left AJ Davidson with an eight-month prison term and a two-year driving ban which starts when he leaves jail.

Judge Sarah Hancox was shown a video of the incident which took place on Hucknall Market Place on May 19.

She told him: "It was an extraordinarily reckless manoeuvre to reverse down the road and in a terrifyingly deliberate manoeuvre to turn the car towards the group.

"I would genuinely hope that you looked at that video and thought 'oh my God, what on earth was I doing that evening?'

"You skittled her as she walked while talking to her boyfriend on Facetime. What you did was undoubtedly dangerous and you have accepted that," the judge told Davidson, 31, of Foresters Street, Netherfield.

Jonathan Hullis, mitigating, told Nottingham Crown Court: "He struggles to talk about it because he can't believe he did it."

But he said that Davidson only drove the car forward for one metre. It was not going quickly because it had just halted after reversing.

Mr Hullis said: "The defendant saw his friends were being assaulted, he thought they were getting beaten.

"He thought if he put the car forward, they would all scatter."

At the time, Davidson was wearing an electronic tag following a release from custody. His fingerprints were on the Vauxhall car and so he was sure to be detained, added Mr Hullis.

Stuart Pattinson, prosecuting, said that the injured girl had no connection with the fighting. She had been out with friends and had nothing to drink.

She did not know what had hit her and began to cry when she turned to realise it was a car.

She was left with ligament injuries which usually took up to six weeks to clear, added Mr Pattinson.

In a statement, the girl said: "I was in shock and wary about going out but now I feel more comfortable."

Davidson admitted dangerous driving and assault causing actual bodily harm. He will have to take an extended driving test if he wants to use a car again.
