Motorist caught going nearly 180kmh as gardai shut down speedster in Clare

A Garda unit in Munster clocked a car going almost 180kmh before being caught by officers earlier this afternoon.

This day last month was National Slow Down Day, with nearly 1,000 vehicles found speeding.

Chief Superintendent Ray McMahon of the Roads Policing Bureau said that this was 'concerning' - and he will not have been happy with today's incident in Clare.

A Garda spokesperson said: "Clare Roads Policing Unit detected this car travelling at 178kph in a 120kph zone on the M18. Proceedings are to follow."

There are a number of potential penalties for those who are caught speeding.

Off the bat, drivers caught breaking the limit will be hit with a fixed charge fine of €80, together with three penalty points.

If they have been caught speeding on police traffic camera, they will get notice of the fine and penalty points of the offence by post.

From then, they have 28 days in which to pay the fine from the date the notice issues.

Failure to pay sees the fine increase to €120 before going to courts if it still isn't paid by then.

Should the driver then be convicted in court, they receive 5 penalty points and a maximum fine of €1,000.
