Motorist caught driving hundreds of miles from Liverpool to deliver a puppy

A motorist who had driven hundreds of miles from Liverpool to deliver a puppy was issued with a warning by police after breaking lockdown rules.

During a routine stop, officers in Gloucestershire pulled over the driver travelling on the M5 motorway.

Enquiring about their trip, police were left unimpressed when the driver said they were on their way to deliver a puppy in Newport, South Wales.

Officers gave the rule-breaker a warning letter and told them to return immediately to Liverpool.

Chief Inspector of the Specials in Gloucestershire, Steve Lindsay, tweeted: "Op Indemnis Team out today. Delivering a puppy to Newport, bough online from a place in Liverpool.

"Driver given a warning letter and instructed to return back to Liverpool."

Long-distance journeys are not advised by the government in an aim to prevent the spread of the coronavirus which has claimed over 30,000 lives in the UK.

From Wednesday, people in England have permission to travel anywhere "irrespective of distance", as long as it is for exercise in an "outdoor open space".
