Motorist arrested after allegedly evading garda checkpoint and shunting toll barrier

A motorist was arrested after allegedly evading a garda checkpoint and shunting a toll barrier aside at the Port Tunnel this afternoon.

The checkpoint was set up by gardai as part of Operation Daylight, a multi-agency initiative involving An Garda Síochána, Transport Infrastructure Ireland and Egis Port Tunnel Operators targeting dangerous driving.

The motorist allegedly managed to evade the checkpoint and shunted a barrier aside to evade toll payment.

Gardai then stopped the man on East Wall Road where he was arrested for dangerous driving.

The garda operation is targeting persistent dangerous driving in the tunnel and on the motorway network.

Offences being targeted include speeding, tailgating and deliberately evading payment of tolls.

Three other drivers were arrested also for dangerous driving and tested at the roadside for drugs and alcohol.

Two drivers tested positive for cannabis and one for cocaine.

All four motorists have since appeared before Dublin District Courts charged with offences under the Road Traffic Acts.
