Motoring expert issues warning to drivers as clocks set to go back

A motoring expert has issued a warning to drivers as the clocks prepare to go back.

British Summer Time is set to come to an end one day before Halloween this year, on Sunday, October 30 2022. This means we gain an extra hour as the UK returns to Greenwich Mean Time.

The clocks go back as a way to make the most of natural daylight. The change means people will be driving in the dark more frequently and specialists from Driver Hire warned low-light driving can bring issues.

Richard Owen-Hughes said: "The winter months can throw many hurdles when it comes to driving in extreme weather conditions. Professional drivers should be doing a daily walk around check in any case.

"But it’s important for everyone to make sure that your vehicle is in a fit state to be driven by giving it a full check down, looking at the likes of coolant and tyre treads, as well as just making sure you take extra care whilst behind the wheel."

The HGV recruitment specialists urged drivers to make sure they are alert in the dark conditions and shared a few tips. It said: "It’s natural to feel tired when it’s dark outside, and this can be a further danger when driving during the winter months."

It also urged drivers to ensure they set off to their location with plenty of time to avoid rushing. It added: "Driving fast in the dark, and winter weather, is a recipe for disaster as you’ll have even less time to react in poor visibility."

Drivers are also advised to keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of them. It added: "In dark conditions, it is important the rhythm of traffic is as smooth as possible to avoid unpredictable driving."

Motorists should also be careful of bright headlights. It added: "When dark, it’s not uncommon for drivers to have their full beam on, which can dazzle drivers coming the other way.

"Although it may seem hard to ignore, look away from oncoming headlight beams to avoid your vision being impaired, and re angle your mirrors to reflect the light away if needs be."
