Motorcyclist taken to hospital after early morning crash on Great North Road in Gosforth

A woman has been taken to hospital after she was involved in an early morning crash in Newcastle .

Great North Road in Gosforth was closed for more than three hours as police cordoned off the area.

The woman, who was riding a motorcycle, was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with leg and pelvic injuries.

Police were called to the scene, near Gosforth Central Middle School, shortly before 5.30am on Friday after reports of a collision between a car and motorbike.

The southbound carriageway was closed while officers carried out investigation works and cleared the scene.

A spokesman for the North East Ambulance Service said a double-crewed ambulance and specialist paramedics were sent to the scene.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: "At 5.26am today (Friday), we received a report of a road traffic collision involving a car and a motorbike on Great North Road near Regent Centre, Gosforth.

"Emergency services attended and a female rider was taken to hospital with leg injuries.

"The southbound carriageway was closed as the vehicle was recovered and enquiries were carried out, but has now reopened."
