Boy, 16, killed in head-on motorbike crash as off duty medics rush to help

A 16-year-old boy was killed in a head-on smash when the motorcycle he was riding was involved in a three-vehicle crash.

Demari Thomas died at the scene despite off-duty medics rushing from their homes to help.

Police believe the motorbike he was riding was overtaking a black Audi when it collided with a Ford Fiesta, travelling in the opposite direction.

Two drivers of the cars involved were also injured, with one woman taken to hospital after the crash in Sutton Coldfield at around 8pm last night.

Medically trained staff who had heard the crash raced from their homes to help, and started CPR on the man who had been on the motorbike.

Four ambulances, a paramedic officer, a MERIT trauma doctor and a critical care paramedic all arrived attended the scene but the man, who has not yet been named, died at the scene,

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswomen said: "The drivers of both cars, two women, were out of their vehicles and were assessed by ambulance staff after sustaining minor injuries in the collision.

"One woman was conveyed to Good Hope Hospital for further precautionary checks whilst the other woman was discharged on scene.”

“When ambulance crews arrived, they found several off-duty medics who had stopped to render aid and were administering CPR to the motorcyclist, a man, who was in cardiac arrest.

"Ambulance crews and MERIT quickly took over treatment to administer advanced life support but sadly, despite everyone’s best efforts, nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead on scene a short time later."

West Midlands Fire Service spokeswoman said: "A fire engine from Sutton Coldfield fire station and a Brigade Response Vehicle from Perry Barr, crewed by a total of eight firefighters, attended.

"The incident involved two cars and a motorbike.

"Firefighters worked alongside doctors to deliver CPR and defibrillation to the motorcyclist. Very sadly, in spite of their efforts, he died at the scene.

"Two women were also treated at the scene, one of whom is believed to have been taken to hospital by ambulance."

Police enquiries continue to establish exactly what happened and they are we are asking any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to get in touch.

PC Kate Hall, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "A teenager has sadly lost his life and our thoughts are with Demari's family, who are being supported by specialist officers at this difficult time.

"We have spoken with witnesses and carried out house-to-house enquiries as we continue to work to establish the full circumstances of the collision.

"It happened on a busy road and we'd ask any witnesses or drivers with footage of the incident, or in the minutes leading up to it, to contact us."
