Motorcyclist dies in crash in Gainstown, Co Westmeath

Gardai in the midlands are appealing for witnesses after a motorcyclist died in a crash today.

It is understood the rider, a man in his 30s, and his bike left the main Mullingar to Rochfortbridge road and smashed into a ditch.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident on the R400 at Gainstown, Co Westmeath.

Gardai and emergency services were alerted shortly after 5pm and attended the scene.

The deceased was removed to Mullingar Hospital and arrangements are being made for a post-mortem exam.

Garda forensic investigators examined the crash scene this evening and local traffic diversions are in place.
