Motorcyclist dies following crash on country road

A motorcyclist has died following a crash on a rural road in Wigan .

Emergency services were called to Riley Lane in the Haigh area on Sunday afternoon to reports of a collision involving a motorbike and a VW Golf.

The rider of the bike, a man in his 30s, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Riley Lane remains closed in both directions while investigation work is carried out.

Closures are also in place at the junction with Meadow Pit Lane, as well as on Toddington Lane near to the caravan park.

GMP is appealing for anyone with information relating to the crash, or who may have been in the area around the time of the collision, to get in touch.

A force spokesman said: "Officers are currently responding to an incident in Wigan.

"At around 2.30pm today, police were called to Riley Lane in Wigan to reports of a collision involving a motorbike and a VW Golf car.

"Despite the best efforts of paramedics, the motorcyclist - a man in his 30s - was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

"The driver of the golf remained at the scene to speak with officers.

"There are currently road closures in place on Toddington Lane, as well as at the junction of Riley Lane and Meadowpit Lane and we would advise that people avoid the area where possible.

"No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing.

"Police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen either vehicle in the area at the time of the collision and are keen to speak to anyone with dashcam footage."

Anyone with any information should contact police on 101 quoting incident number 1231 of April 14.
