Motorcyclist dies after M74 horror crash that sparked five-hour delays

A biker has died after a horror crash that brought the M74 to a standstill.

Emergency services were called to the northbound carriageway of the major road that links Glasgow and Gretna at just before 4pm this afternoon.

The motorway remained closed for more than five hours, causing travel chaos for hundreds of motorists.

Police have since confirmed that a male motorcyclist has died as a result of his injuries during the one-vehicle crash.

He was taken to hospital but sadly died a short time later.

Traffic was being diverted off the motorway at Junction 13, near to Abington, before the road was eventually reopened at at 9.45pm.

Traffic Scotland have advised motorists, however, that despite lanes being up and running again, it will take time for the disruption to fully clear.

A Police Scotland spokesperson confirmed: "At around 15.50pm police were called to reports of a road traffic collision involving a motorcyclist on the M74 northbound near to Junction 11.

"The male rider was taken to hospital where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.

"Enquiries are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident".

No more details on the biker have been released at this time.
