A motorcycle rider has died after a horrific collision with a truck at Lake Macquarie on Friday morning.

Police say the rider, believed to be aged in his 70s, was travelling north on Ranton Street at Cardiff before colliding with a south-bound truck.

The rider was thrown from his motorcycle and became trapped under a stationary vehicle until the arrival of emergency services, police said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

NSW Police and emergency services arrived on the scene at the intersection of Mitchell and Ranton streets around 11.40am. The 46-year-old male truck driver and the female driver of the vehicle were uninjured and taken to John Hunter Hospital for mandatory testing.

Officers attached to Lake Macquarie Police District established a crime scene and have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or who may have dashcam footage is urged to come forward.
