Motorcyclist charged after collision with police officer

A MAN will face court in August after he was charged over a pursuit in which a police officer was struck by a trail bike earlier this year.

Port Stephens Hunter police began a pursuit with a motorcyclist on the New England Highway at Maitland just before 7pm on April 14.

A short time later a senior constable was on foot near High Street when the bike allegedly struck him.

The rider was thrown from the vehicle, which careened into a Mitsubishi Pajero headed north on the highway.

Police on Tuesday said the 36-year-old senior constable was treated at the scene before he was flown to John Hunter Hospital.

He remains a patient there, police said in a statement. He is receiving treatment for a wrist fracture, arm laceration and possible broken nose.

The 19-year-old trail bike rider was taken to the same hospital with head, leg and pelvis injuries.

Crash investigators examined the scene. Their inquiries led to police arresting the 19-year-old after he attended Maitland police station on Monday.

He was charged with 28 offences including aggravated dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm - escaping pursuit, and dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm - drive manner dangerous.

The 19-year-old received conditional bail to face Maitland Local Court on August 18.
