Motorcyclist caught ripping up football pitch where thousands was spent improving surface

A Swansea football side face having to make repairs to their playing field after a motorcyclist churned up part of the turf.

The rider, who was captured on video causing damage to Morriston Town FC’s pitch off Clydach Road, is the latest example of motorcyclists causing damage to land while exploiting the coronavirus lock down.

Morriston Town, which has three senior sides, as well as youth and child age group teams, spend up to £2,000 every year at the end of the season, to maintain the playing pitch’s playing surface.

Club chairman Martin Davies said: “It is really disappointing. This guy was doing some wheel skids, and it was sent on snapchat to a someone who plays for one of our teams.

“Every year we spend between £1500 and £2000 on restoring the pitch surface. They left a mark about ten metres in length, which could have been worse, but it is still annoying.

“I left the army and came back to the club I used to play for when I was younger.

“It had been a bit of an old man’s drinking hole, but we turned it around, got the junior teams going, and we’ve got darts teams and pool teams going on now.

“We’ve got ten of us on the committee, and we’re all volunteers, non of us takes a wage, it is is all about doing something for the community, providing somewhere to do something.

“When this happens, it feels like you’ve taken three steps forward then have to take a couple back”.

South Wales Police are appealing for any information about the incident.

A spokesman added: “We received a report of damage to a community pitch at Morriston Football club which took place on April 1.

“An investigation is ongoing and anyone with information should contact 101 quoting occurrence 2000110404”.
